This is a great romance and history book in one. What a great mix. But with Constance and John on opposite sides of the war, it makes for an interesting dynamic. A great romance and domestic discipline weaved in. Constance riles up John on purpose even though she knows she will get punished, but she does have her own mind and causes and thinks she's right. Another great Maryse Dawson story. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
What a thoroughly engaging historical romance story!! The time period was extremely exciting and entertaining, but the characters!!! This is where this book had me laughing as I turned the pages as quickly as I could!! Constance was the little prankster in this book. Her chosen enemy was John Fawcroft, and he didn't find Constance funny or very endearing. He did though, try diligently to stop her behavior with a good many spankings!! The other characters in the book lent a dangerous and a mysterious light to the story when they were on opposing sides of the monarchy! AGreat job, and a Great romance! I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
I enjoyed this story that covers English Civil War, from 1641until 1649 when King Charles was in power, and Parliament was fighting the Royalist. The story will have two families who are joined in marriages but have different loyalties and the hardship that it will encompass. Ms. Dawson has used artistic liberties to spin an intriguing tale during this trying time in England’s history.
The Milburn Family are Royalist, and loyal to their King. Robert Milburn and eventually his older brother, Edward will fight along with Prince Rupert. John Fawcroft is a Member of Parliament and loyal to the people. Lucy Fawcroft will marry Edward Milburn, and Constance Milburn will marry John Fawcroft.
The plot of the story is the love/hate and eventual marriage of John Fawcroft and Constance Milburn. From the time they meet, at Lucy and Edwards wedding, there is angst, and with Constance, pranks. “A prank wasn’t so much fun when you were on the receiving end.†John quickly takes Constance in hand, spanking her. “You are a wayward chit who seems intent on vexing me to the point of no return.†Every time they get together, she does something that has him punishing her. “You act light a naughty girl, you will get treated like one!†In spite of everything, she daydreams about him when he is gone and can’t wait to see him again. “His cool dominance made her heart flutter alarmingly.†It must be love for him to put up with her childish and headstrong ways. She deliberately does things to upset him, she puts herself in harm's way, where he will have to rescue and protect her, and then correct her with a spanking. I found myself laughing out loud so many times at the antics of Constance and the dominance of John. Even knowing she will find herself over his lap for her impetuous ways, she still does it.
